Why Automatic Doors Must Be Serviced

An automatic door is a powered machine that operates unsupervised around members of the public. UK law and standards treat it accordingly.
The Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 apply to powered door systems as machinery, placing duties around safe operation.
BS EN 16005 is the standard governing the safe use of power-operated pedestrian doorsets. It sets out how doors should perform, how closing forces should be limited, and the expectation that doors are inspected and tested at appropriate intervals by a competent person.
The Equality Act 2010 requires reasonable access to buildings. An automatic entrance that fails leaves disabled visitors and staff unable to enter independently.
A door with a failed safety sensor can close on a child, an elderly visitor or a member of staff. Servicing is how you demonstrate the door was maintained properly - and how you avoid the incident in the first place.
The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 places a general duty on employers and building operators to ensure equipment does not put people at risk.

How Often Should Automatic Doors Be Serviced?
There is no single figure that fits every door. Frequency should reflect how hard the door works and what would happen if it failed.
Twice a year is the common baseline for a standard commercial entrance in normal use.
Three to four times a year suits high-traffic entrances - supermarkets, shopping centres, busy healthcare buildings and transport hubs - where a door may cycle thousands of times a day.
More frequent visits may be appropriate where a door is safety-critical, is the sole accessible entrance, or operates in a harsh environment such as an industrial site or a coastal location.
We will recommend an interval based on the doors you have and how they are used, rather than selling you visits you don't need.
